Chambliss, Martin advance to runoff

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The race in Georgia for the US Senate seat was too close to call and now incumbent Republican Saxby Chambliss and Democrat Jim Martin advance to a runoff.

The latest results from the Secretary of State's website shows Chambliss with 49.9 percent of the vote and Jim Martin with 46.7 percent.

A winner must have 50 percent plus 1 of the vote, otherwise the race goes into a runoff and that's exactly what happened.

With 4 percent of the vote this left to be counted, both candidates are taking no chances and have begun their run-off campaigns.

Martin tells WTOC the numbers favor him, with most of the remaining votes coming from counties where he has a sizable lead on Chambliss.

"Something could happen, but we are certain there will be a run-off and we have started campaigning," Martin told WTOC. "We will stay on our message. Jim Martin will work for working class citizens and will watch out for them in Washington."

The runoff election is scheduled for December 2.
