POOLER, GA (WTOC) - For the most part, Godley Station Boulevard in Pooler is a quiet road. On any given day you will see folks taking leisurely walks or people in nearby neighborhoods sitting outside talking to one another. It's not a typical place to find vandalism, but a United States Postal Service collection box was destroyed and all the mail inside was stolen.
"I think it's pretty sad that someone would resort to this type of vandalism," said Brandon Jackson who lives near Godley Station Boulevard.
"There are things that you just don't do," said John Schwanfelder who also lives in the area.
Residents were notified Saturday of the incident. They were told anyone that put mail in box from 2 pm Thursday to 2 pm Friday should take steps to protect themselves from identity theft.
"When I got that letter Saturday morning I literally freaked out," said Sandra Downes, who uses the collection box regularly.
Sandra has already been the victim of identity theft once and is concerned she will be again. Like many residents she did deposit items in the box on Friday.
"I've been using that mailbox since it was first put up two years ago. Instead of putting my mail in my own mailbox, I was worried about identity theft," said Sandra. "I thought it was the greatest thing to hit Godley Station Boulevard."
But what was once the greatest thing to Sandra is now causing a major headache. "I was told that I have to go online and I also have three numbers of companies to call so I can have a red flag raised over my social security numbers and credit cards. It's very disconcerting."
The postal service says anyone that discovers their personal information may have been compromised needs to contact the Postal Inspection Service at 231-0618.
