Nottingham DriveFor the tenth time in nine days, Savannah firefighters were out battling a fire. This one put a family out of their home, when the kitchen went up in flames.
When the fire, on Nottingham Drive on Savannah's southside, started spreading just after 7pm, it moved fast.
"I walked around there, and I seen the fire out there in the kitchen area, and it was burning real bad," recalled neighbor James Council.
Firefighters say they think a woman was cooking when something went wrong.
"Looks like this was accidental in the kitchen, grease caught fire while a lady was cooking, spread to the rest of the kitchen," said Asst. Chief Hugh Futrell with the Southside Fire Department.
The woman ran out the back, and her two children were able to get out a different door while the fire settled in, getting into the ceiling and walls.
"Then the fire just spread throughout the house," said Council. "It was uncontrollable, you know? I'm just glad the fire department got here when it did."
"Fire was coming out the backside of the house, above the roofline," said Futrell.
Nobody was hurt, although the woman who lives in the house was pretty shaken. In all, more than 30 Firefighters were working on getting the blaze under control.
Nottingham Drive was shut down for more than an hour and a half while crews cleaned up as much as they could.
