COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Six players from both Clemson and South Carolina will be suspended for one game next season for their participation in a brawl near the end of the rivalry game November 20th.
The Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference announced the suspensions today. Both schools declined bowl invitations last week as punishment for their players. Clemson's six players must serve a one-game suspension at anytime during the next regular season.
South Carolina's six players will serve their suspensions during the first game of the season against Central Florida on September third.
Clemson coach Tommy Bowden spoke for the first time about the fight in a statement released by the school today. Bowden says he was disappointed with his players but 90 percent of them either stayed out of the brawl or tried to break it up.
The Clemson players suspended are Duane Coleman, Nathan Bennett, Brandon Cannon, Roman Fry, Maurice Nelson and Anthony Waters.
The South Carolina players suspended are Daccus Turman, Jermaine Sims, Freddy Saint-Preux, Woodly Telfort, Moe Thompson and Charles Silas.
Both conferences said other players would have been suspended but do not have any eligibility left.
