DISCUSSION:
Monday, Late Afternoon, February 8, 2010
Brief Sunshine Leaving:
Sunshine ruled the day today but temperatures remain cool. Another rain system is racing this way but unlike the last several ones that have past, this one is moving rather rapidly and is not expected to drop much precipitation in our area, most likely less than a quarter of an inch. The sky will fill up with clouds during the night with a chance for the rain in the afternoon and evening tomorrow. The sky will begin to clear tomorrow night.
Wind and Cold Coming:
The storm center that will be producing our rain will dump another half foot or more of snow over the mid Atlantic states including Washington D.C. This system will also generate strong winds and the back edge of that will affect us late tomorrow night and during the day Wednesday. Winds will be averaging 10-20 mph with some gusts over 30 mph, particularly Wednesday morning and early afternoon. The air will be cold behind this system as well with lows to drop into the mid to upper 20s Wednesday night away from the coast.
Cold Period On The Way:
Fair and cool weather will prevail Thursday with another light rain system to zip through the area late Friday into early Saturday. This will be followed by fair and cold weather for the rest of the weekend into early next week. As a matter of fact, there are indications that the "Polar Vortex" will drift southward again, similar to that of early January but not as intense nor in duration, giving us a spell of below normal temperatures for the middle portion of February.

Very Wet Start of the Year:
Already, 8.19 inches of rain has fallen at the official rain gauge at the Savannah airport. Normal up to early February is 4.52 inches, so we are nearly double of what is expected. Like December, January was abnormally wet and February is shaping up to be just as wet. This is aggravating the local area rivers pushing them above flood levels. Perhaps the greatest topic of concern lately is "Global Warming" or for the better term "Global Climate Change". The big question is; is it real?
