TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) - Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks and people on Tybee Island are thankful the power is back on.

Thousands lost power Thanksgiving morning after a crash took out a power pole around 2am. Tybee police say a woman tried to pass another car going west on Highway 80 near the Bull River bridge when she lost control and hit a power pole. See Tybee residents wake to power outage.

Billy and Brenda Manucy woke up early to begin preparing Thanksgiving dinner, but they didn't know they would have to do it in the dark.

"There is no power on the island, my generator is powering this," Manucy told WTOC. "I've got a turkey in the oven but I can't cook it yet."

While the accident was minor it did knock out power to around 4,000 homes.

"I'm freaking, I have 40 for dinner ," said Manucy. "We have had dinner here for 13 years that is my job to have dinner here."

The Manucy's are now trying to stir up new ways to get Thanksgiving dinner on the table, as Georgia Power works around the clock to get service restored.

"Trying to prepare as much as we can with a lamp, it is throwing us off schedule," said Brenda Manucy.

And as Bill continues to preapre the feast in the dark, the power came back on.

"Tom is finally going to get cooked," Bill said referring to his turkey.

But a short time later, Tom started to get cold yet again.

"When the electricity came back on it blew up a generator," Bill explained.

And down the street a hot power line fell into a woman's yard.

"The lights started getting real bright in the house, then I heard something popping and then the lights when out," said Williams Sammie.

Sammie Williams says it sounded like firecrackers going off. Fire crews were on standby as Georgia Power disconnedted the power on Williams Street.

"I said, 'Oh no not again we just got the power on'," Williams told WTOC.

But it wasn't long before Mrs. Williams and the Mancuy's were able to cook up a hot turkey for this Thanksgiving.

A Georgia Power representative said all the power should be back on.
