SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Some new, chilling details were brought out in court Wednesday about the man accused of gunning down is own wife.
Robert Johnson was in Chatham County Recorder's Court for his preliminary hearing. He is charged with shooting his wife Mary Ellen to death on Halloween. See Coffee Bluff shooting leaves one dead, one in custody and Coffee Bluff shooting suspect denied bond.
Police detective Josh Hunt told the judge the couple had been arguing all day at their home off Coffee Bluff Road. Hunt said Mary Ellen had packed a suitcase and was going to leave her husband. Hunt said Robert told him he was tried of her nagging.
Detective Hunt then told the judge how the shooting happened. "He chased her around the van a couple of times, got right up on her, caught her, shot her once in the chest. Then he got into his Ford Expedition and drove away."
Police say two family members witnessed Robert shoot Mary Ellen. Police say the murder weapon was a very old rifle from the World War I era.
Judge Lawrence Dillon found there was enough evidence against Robert Johnson to send the case to a grand jury.
