SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – It was a happy reunion for a Savannah man and his precious dog.
The 14-year-old dog was inside of the owner's car when it was stolen from the parking lot at a Savannah post office. See Man searches for stolen car with dog left inside.
One week later, a WTOC viewer found the dog after seeing WTOC's story and reuinted Otis with his owner.
Otis sniffs around to make sure nothing has changed, but he can't wander far from his owner, because now he is being kept on quite a short leash.
For nearly a week the 14-year-old dog was separated from his best friend, Homer Jenkins.
"I got him back," said Jenkins.
Otis was inside Jenkins car when it was stolen from outside the Fahm street post office last Monday.
Family and friends posted flyers all around town hoping someone would find Otis alive and well.
Then this past weekend, their prayers were answered.
"My wife received a telephone call from this lady that described the dog," said Jenkins.
She had seen our story on Otis earlier that week, and recognized him. She told the Jenkins' her son had found Otis.
The same day the car was stolen, Otis was found wandering around Bay Street.
"He thought he ran over Otis," said Jenkins. "Otis ran inside the car and he stopped and got him."
When Jenkins learned what the man had done for Otis he just couldn't believe it.
"I thank God that he found him," said Jenkins. "He cared for him and took him to the vet. He said he thought he (Otis) got injured when he ran into the car. He didn't, he was in good shape."
Now that Otis is safely home Jenkins says he will never leave him unattended in the car again. "It is a mistake I made," he told WTOC.
Jenkins car was also recovered on Saturday. It was found at the intersection of Bullock and 38th street along with another stolen vehicle.
Police are currently collecting evidence from car in order to identify a suspect in this case. If you have any information call police or CrimeStoppers 912.234.2020.
