SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The world is coming to an end on Thursday at midnight, at least on the silver screen as the new movie "2012" opens in theaters.
The film stars John Cusack and focuses on the doomsday theory that because the Mayan calendar ends on December 21, 2012, so does civilization. A theory that some see both sides of.
"I don't think anyone knows the end of time. I believe the Bible says, only God knows. Not even the angels in Heaven, only God knows when the end of time will come," said Darrell Quintrell, who was visiting Savannah from West Virginia.
"I think it's a possibility that it could happen of course, anything is a possibility. But I don't believe that will be the end of the world," said Diane McGrath, who was in town from Boston with her friend.
Many of the people we spoke with say the movie's attraction of doomsday sounds like a recent theory of how the world would come crashing down.
"I think people like to be scared. There's always something. Either all the computers are going to crash in 2000 or the bees are going to come up from South America and kill us all. People just like being scared," said Justin Cardiff from Savannah.
"It reminds me of the Y2K thing, so I doubt it will happen. On December 22, we're going to wake up and the world is going to be the same," Barbara Lombardi, who was visiting SCAD with her daughter from Iowa.
NASA scientists have dismissed the idea of the world ending in 2012, saying on its website the doomsday theory is nothing more than an internet hoax.
But whether you believe in the world ending in 2012 or not, there are some strong opinions on seeing this film.
"I wouldn't care one bit to see it," said Quintrell
"I'll go see it because they probably put millions of dollars of special effects and it's cool to see a fire works show," said Cardiff.
"Everyone thinks that the world is going to end and it's all scare tactics and that's why I don't want to see it," said Shannon Schaefer.
And these strong opinions usually mean strong numbers at the box office.
