SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – An elderly man's car is stolen while he was in the post office. But it isn't the car he wants returned, it's the Boston Terrier that was inside inside.
Homer Jenkins' 14-year-old dog Otis was inside of the car when it was taken. Jenkins says he parked his car outside of the Fahm Street post office for a few minutes and when he returned, his car and his Boston Terrier were gone.
Jenkins says he left the window cracked for Otis, who was sitting in the passenger seat.
"Went in to get some stamps, gone about three to five minutes, came out and the car and dog were gone," said Jenkins.
As Jenkins retells the story, it brings tears to his eyes. He loves this dog like one of his own children.
"He is a family member, as far as I am concerned," said Jenkins.
What hurts the most for Jenkins is that he may never see his friend again.
"When you go in the house and don't see him it hurts." said Jenkins.
The rest of the family is also worried. "It's affected all of us. The grand kids, everybody," said Jenkins' wife Stormsie Jenkins.
Having only a few pictures of Otis makes it that much more difficult to find him. The family packed away the pictures of their precious dog in their hurricane kit for safe keeping.
They hope someone will spot the car and find Otis safely inside.
"My biggest fear is whoever took this car abandoned this car and he is still in car. If somebody can look for this bright red Toyota you don't see a lot of them," said Mrs. Jenkins.
The car is the least of the family's worries. All they want is their Otis returned home safely.
"He was like a child, in fact my husband called him son. We need to find him," said Mrs. Jenkins.
The family spent the afternoon posting flyers all around town hoping someone will spot Otis and return him home.
The black and white elderly dog was inside of the stolen, red four door 2008 Toyota Camry, with tag number BFX 6656.
