BLOOMINGDALE, GA (WTOC) - Areas like Bloomingdale have seen big voter turnouts Tuesday, where they have a mayor and council race to decide.
There was a steady stream of voters at the Bloomingdale Community Center as the two candidates for mayor made their last efforts to cash in the votes.
Candidate Mary Mitchell is the first African-American woman to run for mayor in Bloomingdale.
"It's a new day in Bloomingdale and I've gone to every home and all the citizens are saying the same, they are ready for a change and to move forward," said Mitchell.
Mitchell spent her day on the corner of Highway 80 and Pine Street waving to everyone and hoping Tuesday was her day to make history.
"I would be honored to serve the citizens of Bloomingdale," said Mitchell.
But so would incumbent mayor Wayne Tipton who spent his day walking the streets greeting voters.
"It's been an exciting race for myself and citizens of Bloomingdale. It's a special time and we've never had this much interest in an election," said Tipton.
The polling manager says voter turnout is higher than it's been in years, especially for a municipal election and that the biggest driving force is the race for mayor.
"I thought it was important for the mayor of Bloomingdale and I think we need a few changes," said voter Tom Boatright.
