POOLER, GA (WTOC) - Honor Flight Network took six World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorial of the war they risked their lives fighting in.

Honor Flight, a non-profit organization that honors veterans by sending them to the nation's capitol to visit the memorial that honors their sacrifice.

Late Saturday night, those six men arrived at Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport after having had an experience to remember.

"It's truly an honor for us to honor these veterans that did so much for us," said Honor Flight representative Owen Hand. "Everywhere we were on the airplanes, young men in uniform or not in uniform would come up and thank them and that's what it's all about."

The vets were greeted back to Savannah by the local contigent from Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield.  US congressman Jack Kingston was also there to welcome back the group of local heroes.

"I've had I guess fifty people come up to me, shake my hand, and tell me how proud they was--white, black, service men, civilians, women, men," said World War II veteran G.J. Bath. "I never thought too much of myself until today I don't guess, but I believe I'm somebody now."
