Tim's Take: Get lost in Odum corn maze

ODUM, GA (WTOC) - What happens when the directionally challenged meets intentional confusion, when you never know where you're going and don't even know if you'll get there?

That's the concept behind the corn maze at Poppell Farms in Odum, a new Halloween attraction that's already a tradition.

"This is our third year doing the maze,'' said Tanya Poppell. "And we have thousands of people joins us.''

The challenge is to enter a life-sized labyrinth carved into the Poppell's 10-acre corn farm, a series of turns, tricks and dead ends that can test and totally confound anyone.

It's supposed to be easy enough that a child could do it. So it's probably best to go through it with children. They may get turned around as much as adults, but they'll just have fun doing it.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for kids to experience nature, which they don't usually get to do,'' said Pay Hailey, the research coordinator for Appling County Schools. "They measure their pumpkins, they get to come in here, they get to see where corn really comes from. So many kids think it comes from a can. So this  is a great opportunity for them to get to see, smell the dirt and be right in the nature."

They call this agritainment, a combination of agriculture and entertainment. But some people might call it scary.

It really is a lot of fun, but the longer you spend in there and the more wrong turns you make, you start to wonder if you're ever going to get out and, who's in there with you.

And if you do make it out, it will probably be time for something a little more relaxing, like a pumpkin patch, which they also have at Poppell Farms.
