PORT ROYAL, SC (WTOC) - A Lowcountry Police Department is getting special recognition for keeping their streets safe.

AAA Carolinas has just named Port Royal, South Carolina a 2009 South Carolina Traffic Safe Community. It's recognition honoring the town and the Police Department's efforts in keeping the roadways safe for citizens and visitors.

To help eliminate crashes, the Police Department has stepped up enforcement by taking advantage of a grant to add another officer for traffic and DUI enforcement and have taken other pro-active measures, including putting out a speed trailer on the roadways.

"We actually have come a long ways in the traffic enforcement portion of the law enforcement here in Port Royal, reducing wrecks and more importantly keeping people safe on the roadways," said Officer Steve Mowery.

"We've shaved 150 traffic accidents off last year's numbers, which is substantial," said Captain Alan Beach.

Police are urging all drivers to pay attention while behind the wheel and they say to make sure everyone is buckled up.

The Department and the Town were also credited for implementing four way stops in residential neighborhods, reducing speed limits and erecting larger signs to improve viibility.

Officer Mowery with the Port Royal Police Dept is a federally funded traffic enforcement officer. He has been in this position since September of 2007. He has provided the following activity for the month of September 2009:

  • Driving Under the Influence 7
  • Safety Belt 19
  • Child Restraint 2
  • Speeding 3
  • Driving Under Suspension 4
  • 15 Drug Arrests
  • 29 other violations

Officer Mowery has participated in several 14th Circuit Law Enforcement checkpoints.

The Grant funded officer had 986 Traffic tickets this grant year with 44 Driving Under the Influence arrest within the Town limits and throughout the 14th Judicial Circuit. This grant was made possible by the South Carolina Office of Highway Safety, Office of Justice and Highway Safety and all of the officers participating in the 14th Judicial Circuit Law Enforcement Network.

The Port Royal Police Department will continue with the Alcohol Counter Measures Program and are looking forward to the positive it will bring our community.
