STATEBORO, GA - The Georgia Department of Transportation is beginning construction for replacement of three bridges on County Road 223 (Portal/Metter HWY) in Candler and Bulloch counties. The project is expected to be completed by winter 2011.
The full project includes construction of bridges and approaches on County Road 223 over Little Stocking Head Creek, over Big Branch and over Lott's Creek. Funding is provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), and was awarded to Gregory Bridge Company of Eatonton, Georgia, for $3,064,569.68.
Sections of County Road 223 (Portal/ Metter Highway) will be closed to all traffic to enable crews to remove and replace each bridge. The counties will post a signed detour route for each closure and local traffic may use other alternate routes.
The first closure will begin Monday, October 19 for replacement of the bridge over Little Stocking Head Creek. Candler County will be utilizing Rosemary Church Road and Union Road for the signed detour route. Advance notice will be given prior to each subsequent closure.
Motorists are advised to slow down and use extra caution in the work zone.
