SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Special Olympics of Georgia received two special recognitions Friday morning at Chatham County Commission.

Chatham County sheriff Al St. Lawrence gave more than $50,000 raised by his office to the program. In turn, Special Olympics of Georgia gave sheriff St. Lawrence a plaque in his honor of being the highest findraising agency in Georgia. Organizers say it's the people who pitch in that really make a difference.

"Thank you, you made a difference in lives of special athletes thoughout Georgia, locally we make a difference," said deputy Brenda Shermer. "We make dreams come true."

Deputy Shermer has been selected as the 2009 Hall of Fame recipient for the law enforcement torch run program.

Chatham County will bring in the flame of hope during the Georgia Special Olympic Games.
