METTER, GA (WTOC) - Bigger planes can now land at the Metter-Candler County airport thanks to a huge runway extension. The community celebrated with a dedication ceremony Wednesday. They added more than one thousand feet. Community leaders said the extension will help them compete to bring jobs and money.

"We've talked to industry folks about bringing companies here and they liked everything else about our community but told us our runway was too short for them to do business here," explained Metter mayor Billy Trapnell.

The community paid for the extension with a grant from the One Georgia Authority.

"The money comes from One Georgia, which means it is helping bring business back to rural areas,"added Georgia governor Sonny Perdue.

One Georgia grants come from money the state received in the tobacco lawsuit settlements.
