SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - It was a monumental day for some students in Savannah.

Thirty two students from the class of 2013 Mercer University School of Medicine received their first year white coats today during a ceremony at the Mercer Auditorium in Savannah.

Dr. William Bina was the key note speaker, and spoke on the importance of what it means to be a doctor.

Students then recited the Oath of Geneva, promising that they'll serve the medical community in every way they can.

Dr. Bina explained the importance of the event and the student's first year as medical students.

What we're doing trying to do is give them an idea of what it means to be a physician," he explained.  "It's more than getting a degree because at the end of the four year process we intend to change them from the inside out.

Student Hillary Williams is extremely excited about the opportunity.

"I've always said I wanted to be a doctor because my mom went to medical school when I was eight so I got to see her go through it all and I just always wanted to do that."

The first two years students will learn basic knowledge of the medical field and will focus on specific areas in the last two.
