SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A South Carolina teen is in custody in Chatham County after officials say he took Hampton County sheriff's deputies on two, separate high-speed chases.
The Hampton County Sheriff's Office says the 16-year-old was driving more than 100 miles per hour on Highway 278 in a stolen Honda Accord Tuesday morning when the first chase began. Deputies called off the chase because they couldn't keep up with the teen.
Then around 2:15am Wednesday, deputies say they chased the teen again when they saw the car near Estill. The sheriff's office says the teen took off again, speeding down Highway 321 into Garnett and Jasper County.
Deputies chased the car through Hardeeville until the suspect crossed into Georgia where Port Wentworth officers picked up the chase.
The teen crashed into a pond and took off on foot. The suspect was eventually arrested later on Wednesday after officials say the teen stole an 18-wheeler and crashed it.
The suspect is now being held by the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.
