CLAXTON, GA (WTOC) - A pick up truck came to a crashing halt after a Georgia State trooper used a PIT manuver to stop it after a high speed chase. Investigators were chasing the driver after they said he robbed The Claxton Bank's branch in nearby Bellville around 4:15 Friday afternoon. The driver used a gun in the robbery and sped away in a pickup truck. Troopers spotted a truck of the same description on US Highway 301 North of Claxton and gave chase.
"The troopers spotted him northbound on 301 and turned to chase. They made it up near (Interstate) 16 where he turned around. They followed and chased him back toward Claxton," explained Evans County Sheriff Randall Tippins.
The crash happened less than a mile inside Evans County when the truck left the road and overturned. The driver was flown by helicopter to memorial health.
Inside the car, investigators found a large amount of cash and a gun resembling the one used in the robbery. The man and his truck resemble descriptions from a similar bank robbery in Reidsville back in June. The case is under investigation.
