SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The cold snap we are expecting is catching a lot of people off guard. Especially all those folks out in their yards this weekend who were planting flowers.
Nurseries like Savannah Secret Gardens was swamped this weekend with customers.
DeAundra White and her family were out in the sunshine Saturday planting a variety of colorful flowers. "Yeah we put a lot of work into it," she said.
Now White is worried all that work could be lost, thanks to an unexpected April frost. "It's shocking," she said.
Gardening guru Carol Moore from Savannah Secret Gardens said the best thing to do is cover the plants for the next couple of nights.
"It is important to cover your plants up if you love your spring beauty," said Moore. "You need to protect it because it will freeze."
She says most of her weekend customers spent between $50 and $200 on flowers and shrubs. Some spent much more. "Saturday we had a lady that bought 300 plants, that's a lot of money to lose in a snap moment because of a weird frost," she said.
Secret Gardens is also concerned about its own plants. All plants that have flower buds showing or have already bloomed are in danger.
"We are so happy with all of our beautiful spring color then we have to worry about a frost," said Moore. "So you scramble around trying to cover everything up and put everything inside so it wont be hurt and then the next day you take it all back off because the cold is gone."
Moore recommends covering your plants with a sheet or one of their frost blankets. "They are porous so the air can get through and the frost cannot," she said.
She like the hundreds of folks who just planted their garden, are just hoping this cold snap will be the last.
